Final Entry

Answer the two questions below, and then include your number at the end of your response. Your response should be one or more paragraphs in length.

1. At the end of the book, Wiesel describes himself in the mirror as "a corpse" gazing back at himself. In what ways did Wiesel die during the Holocaust? Does the memoir give you any hope that Wiesel ever started living again?

2. Why do you think Wiesel titled the book "Night?" What are the literal and symbolic meanings of "night" in the book?

  1. - Some ways Wiesel dies are through his religion, in hope and emotionally when his father passes away. Wiesel dies through his religion when he finally believes that God is not real. He doesn't understand how and why God could do this to the world. Wiesel dies in hope when he stops believing that this will end well. He gives up the strength to believe that he and his father will get out successfully in the end. Wiesel dies emotionally when his father dies; he sees no reason to live anymore. He basically becomes a walking zombie. Yes, the memoir gives me hope that Wiesel started to live again. To me, this memoir made me think the Holocaust made him stronger in some ways. He had the strength to write this book. To me, that is living again.
    - I believe Wiesel titled the book "Night" because to him, the Holocaust was like a never-ending night. It was like he never fully woke up during his time there. A literal meaning of "night" in this book is that during the Holocaust, it was always dark with ash in the sky, so people might say that it was like the night because the sun never came out. A symbolic meaning of "night” in the book is that the Holocaust was a dark time for the world and no one wants it to come again. Therefore, some people say that it was nighttime until it ended.

  2. Wiesel's faith and religion died during the Holocaust because for a while he no longer believed in God or His power. He died on the inside, too because he was no longer himself. He did not have a family anymore. His personality and point of view changed while in the camps. I think it does give hope that Wiesel will live again because even though he has changed, he can still move forward to make the best of his life.
I think Wiesel titled it "night" because the whole experience was dark, gloomy, and unreal. It was as if hope, or "sunlight", would never come. It seemed like it would never end-just a night repeating itself. The literal meaning is that everything was dark and unbelievable. The symbolic meaning of it is that nights are usually silent. In the experience, the world was silent on this very "night."

  3. 1)Some ways that Weisel died were physically, mentally and spiritually. He died physically because of the harsh treatment at the concentration camps, mentally because of the way he did things without thought and spiritually because of how he stopped believing in God. The memoir does give me some hope but I know that Weisel never started living again because of how harshly he was treated as a child.
2)I think Weisel titled the book night because of how darkly he was treated and because of how close he was to death even then. Literally-the evacuation at night must have been deathly and symbolically-everyone at the camp was on the verge of death; symbolically for life, death is night.

  4. Wiesel died in the book because he lost his spirit, his soul, and ans reason to live. He lost everything he loved, why would we want to be away from them? He had no strive to live on Earth when everything he wanted was in a better place, heaven. I think that just the fact he wrote the book means he started to live again. He knew that he couldn't spend the rest of his life wishing, or hoping something positive would happen, he had to make it happen.

I think he titled it "Night" because 1) night seems to be when every inmate or prisoner dreaded. Night would fall and everyone would moan and groan, missing the sun. The sun was the only light, the only glimmer that something good was going to happen. and 2) Night is a time of darkness, everyone's asleep, almost dead they are so tired. Night is dead.

  5. A way Weisel dies during the Holocaust is in his faith. He may believe in a god, but he will never be as devout he was before the Holocaust. I did not get a sense of hope that Weisel will begin to live again from the book. I believe Weisel titled the book Night because night is a time of darkness and that is exactly what the Holocaust was.

  6. 1. He "died" because he lost all sense of comfort and security. Not only that, but he lost his whole family. I don't think he really started fully living again, but definately did recover a little bit. Just the fact that he found it within himself to write the book proves that.

    2. I think he named it that because the Holocaust was a dark part of history. The literal meaning would be the nights that he suffered through. The symbolic meaning would be the dark part of his life just like the dark part of a day.

  7. Wiesel died in a way because he lost part of himself. He was no longer that close to God his father was dead and he had no emotions left. Yes it does. I feel that he will never be the same but he is not as bad as he was.

I think that he called it night because it was a very dark time. The literal meaning is that its is dark and the ash made the sky black and dark and the symbolic meaning was that everything was bright and happy but the the sun went down and everything turned black and was a horrific time.

  8. 1. A way that Elie dies while at camp is when he and his father are separated from his mother and sister. Also, he died inside from the abuse and harsh treatment because i would think that all of that would just make you give up on yourself and your life. The biggest way that i think Elie dies is when his only companion, his father, dies. Ye sit does make me think he gained his life back but I just think that that experience was so terrible that those memories will haunt him forever.
    2. I think he titled his book "Night" because everything that happened was as dark as night itself. The symbolic meanings in the book i think are how everything he describes make you think that it could have been dark and gloomy the whole entire time. 8b13

  9. He has emotionally died because he has seen so much death, that it becomes as though it was an everyday-thing. Well yes and no. Elie will never be able to erase the memories from his mind, though he can start a new yet short life (due to his age)

He titles it night because literally as we learned in the museum of tolerance the sky was blotched out by the ashes of the dead corpses. symbolically it describes how swift the night can come and how sinister it is.

  10. During the Holocaust, Wiesel witnessed death, heard death, smelled death, and 'tasted' death. In the sense that he died more a little more inside when these events occured, he would eventually look, to himself, dead. After witnessing something like that, I don't think anyone can ever start living again. When something like that stains your heart, it can't be removed.

To be honest, I have no idea why the book was titled Night. Maybe because through everything, the holocaust was always dark and cold, as night appears to be. The symbolic meaning of Night would be that all this happened so quickly, as if to say it occured over night. The literal meaning would probably be that even though nights occured, Wiesel was always at work and he never got to sleep.

  11. Elizer Wiesel's spirit partially died. He lost a lot of faith in God. Also, the things he say ruined his life and will probably traumatize him for the rest of his life, horrible things happened to him. It doesn't give any real evidence that states that he ever started living again after what he say and the events he was part of. I think Wiesel titled the book "Night" because night was when a lot of the main events happened, and when some of the most tragic things happened (like on the train when the woman kept yelling "Fire!". The literal meaning of night in this book is the darkness and hopelessness that the night brings. NIght is when it is cold, dark, and you are waiting for dawn to come.

  12. Wiesel died in many ways during the Holocaust. While his body never truly died, while on the verge of death, his heart, his faith, and his humanity all died to a certain extent. His faith was the first to go; around the time he started to question God, due to the cruelty that came from life within the camps. After, came his heart, which died around the time he lost all feelings other than that of a burden towards his father. Finally, his humanity left him towards the end, when he recognized himself not as a person, but as a corpse. The book was titled night because it was like one, long, terrible night; much of the book actually took place at night, and night could also be symbolic for the pain that can come from the dark of night.

  13. For one, he lost his father. Also, he had to forget everything else. He had to concentrate on just water, soup, and staying alive another day. He lost a lot, and had to stick to bare minimum. Finally, Elie lost his individuality. His head was shaved, and he was branded with a number.
I think he titled the book Night because during the night, everything is dark. There is no light, or anything good. Also, the literal meaning behind the title would be that they were transfered to the concentration camp by night. 8A#8

  14. Wiesel didn't die physically, but emotionaly. He was treated so terribly and saw so many things that he was dead inside and so close to being dead on the outside too. I think that after getting his normal life back he started to live again. After they were rescued he started to believe that there is good in the world and wanted to contunue his normal life.
I think he titled the book Night because night time is dark and usually cold. In the camps it was a cold and dark place like a never ending night. They never thought they would be able to see the day again, or a nice, bright, happy place.

  15. Weisel, "died" during the Holocaust emotionally because he lost his spirit. His innocence and young life were all taken away from him. He also died physically just because he was so weak and so helpless because he was so malnourished when they escaped.

I think he titled the book, "Night" because night is a time of darkness which can be taken literally or figuratively. Night can be a time of peace or terror. I think he remebers his time during the Holocaust as a very dark one filled with much terror.

  16. 1. Wiesel died in spirit, emotion, and hope in Night. The memoir gives me some hope that he started living again, but he was never the same. His speech seemed a bit dull and lifeless.
    2. I think Wiesel titled the book "Night" because night is dark, and darkness symbolizes evil. The literal meaning is that dark WAS an evil time, Wiesel never knew if he would wake up in the morning. The literal meaning is that the holocaust was evil, cruel, and dark, and Elie sums this up in one word, Night.

  17. He loses his family first of all. Second, he started to doubt the humanity of some people, and if everyone has souls or not. He lost a lot of his dignity and his happy thoughts and the way he views society changed greatly. He will always be living his life the same way, but the way he views people and humanity will be greatly impacted because of the holocaust.

Everyone seems to happen at night. Nobody seemed to pass away during the day, it all happened at night.

  18. Elie Wiesel died during the Holocaust because the spiritual being in him was crushed, and the death of his faith took a big piece of him away. Also, he lost most if not all of his family members to the Holocaust, which killed him as well. The memoir did give me hope that he had begun to live again, because he had begun to talk about the horrors of the event, and was able to describe everything that had happened. I believe that because he was able to talk about it, he will be able to start living again.

I think he titled the book Night because it had literal and metaphorical meanings that directly applied to the book. The literal meaning came from how night was always horrifying to them and when they were forced to march through the snow and cold. The metaphorical meaning came from how there was never any hope, and it was always dark, cold, and eerie at the concentration camps. The sun never rose and provided any hope, and it is just now beginning to be a new day, after the Holocaust.
