  1. EXAMPLE POST (Use as a reference)

"But we didn't lack our share of mysterious knockings on our door in the middle of the night and whispered voices below stairs" (57).

Rachel is explaining that many people secretly visit their house at all times of the night to speak with her father.

This quote is significant because it lets the reader know that there are definitely many secretive things going on behind the scenes, and Rachel, as a young teen, does not truly know what is going on and what her father is involved in.

  2. "You see nothing strange in her friendship with Doctor Warren? Doesn't it seem curious to you that they get on so?"

Debby is wondering whether Sarah sees any thing wrong with the relationship between Rachel and Doctor Warren.

This quote is important because it shows Debby's willingness to assume the worst of people.

  3. "She [Rachel] was sitting with none other tahn Lady Frankland, otherwise known as Agnes Aurriage, the woman Grandmother hated."

Rachel is describing what she is seeeing which is Rachel sitting with Lady Frnakland who Grandmother hates.

This quote is significant to the story because it tells us that Grandmother does not like Lady Frankland. It also tells us that Rachel has friends outside of the family and will see them even if it is against Grandmother. This is significant because it could possibly create more tension between Rachel and Grandmother.

  4. "A line had been drawn in our house, with Debby
and Grandmother on one side, I and Rachel on the other." (Pg. 93)

Rachel and Sarah are fighting with Debby and Grandmother, after the Church accident about Paul Revere.

This quote is significant, because it shows who stands up for one another and who agrees with one another, like Sarah agrees with Rachel, because she wants her to stay with the family and keep them in order.

  5. "Aren't you glad she's made us a family again? Haven't we had enough turmoil?" (pg 112)

Rachel is scolding Debby for badgering and annoying Rachel.

This quote is singificant because Sarah is standing up for Rachel because of how much Rachel has done for the entire Revere family.

  6. "She knew Rachel, true Congregationalist that she was, did not hold with Christmas." page 92

She being grandmother, knows that Rachel doesn't celebrate Christmas. So she is trying to make Rachel uncomfortable by them intensely celebrating Christmas.

The significance is most Congregationalist do not celebrate Christmas. They do because Grandmother's husband, Appolos Rivoire, left the persecutions of Huguenot France and brought the custom with him.

Sarah finds Rachel in the store drinking tea at a booth for Fair Sex with non other than the woman Grandmother hates.

  8. "The sweet voice came through the dark like an angel sound. If I believed in angels. Which I didn't, because people who did had popes in their bellies. Which is what they said in Boston about anyone who was sympathetic to Catholics or their ways." (My Online Book doesn't stateexact page number but it is in Chpt. 6; towards middle of the chapter)

Sarah is explaining how Boston citizens did not support other religions, in this matter, Catholics.

This quote is significant because in England, Catholics were hated for not following England's ways of religious rules. Many people who felt unimportant and discriminated because they were excluded because of their religion. People wanted religious freedom, so they moved to the New World. (America) Even in America, England ruled. The British were the people who were respected and created the laws in America; people who wanted religious freedom, were still longing for it. This shows that even young Sarah noticed how people treated people who were different.

  9. "We children were left to Grandmother's iron rule. She made us work hard sweeping, polishing, carrying, scrubbing. She even blamed us for Mama's death, saying if we'd tended to our chores, Mama would not have died."

This quote explains that, until Rachel moved in, Grandmother was very strict with the children. She even blamed them for their mother's death!

This quote is significant because it tells us that the grandmother's character is very strict and mean. Later we find out that because of the grandmother's character traits, it has scared the little kids. Making one like to dress is boy's clothing because grandma won't let her get a new dress. We find that one child goes potty in her bed because grandma won't let the dog sleep in her room. It also tells a lot about the character of Grandma from Sarah's point of view. Sarah views her grandmother as strict, mean, and frightening.

  10. "In our house we were harried. We worried for Father." (90)

Sarah is explaining that the whole family in the house was very distressed about Paul Revere. They are all scared and unsure where Paul was and what he was up to.

This quote is significant because it lets the reader know that Paul is a very mysterious guy involved with many things. They don't really know where he is and they are very scared because they all know he must be in something pretty serious.

  11. quote: "Isn't a woman allowed a friend or two from before her marriage, Deborah?"

Rachel is saying that she has a right to see other people besides her family and family's friends. She is also telling Grandmother that it is none of her business to ask about personal matters and be nosy.

This quote is significant because the reason Rachel is going out the market to see a friend is because she does not celebrate Christmas. She also seemed to be a bit snappy towards Grandmother which may be because she is hiding something or is feeling guilty about something....

  13. "New York is with us and against our port closing," he said. "Philadelphia will stand with us to the last extremity." (111)

Paul Revere is telling his family that New York and Philadelphia support not closing Boston harbor.

This is significant because it shows that Boston wasn't the only harbor opposed to its closing. It also might mean more week long rides for Paul.

  14. "Philadelphia will stand with us to the last extremity. They are laying the plans for a Continental Congress to discuss the plight of the colonies. Though they say we in Boston have a state of mind not sympathetic to law and order, as do Quakers." (111)

Paul is saying that Philadelphia says they will stand with us in the fight for freedom from England until the very end.

The significance of this quote is that Paul Revere is being backed by Philadelphia to proceed by his plan. By having this help Paul believes that they will succeed and become free from England.

  15. "Some said it was an act of out-and-out lawlessness, others applauded the action. In church last Sunday there had been a fight."
    (pg.91)

Some people were fighting against England, but others, called loyalists, were supportive of England.

This quote is significant because it shows that the Boston Tea Party was big news, and it shows how important Paul is in the cause he is working for. Sarah doesn't know if she should be proud of her dad, or be frustrated that he is being so secretive and is always busy.

  16. "Isn't a women allowed a friend or two from before her marriage, Deborah? I'm sure you can keep things in order here. I don't seem to be needed" (97).

Rachel is speaking to Grandmother about how it's okay to have other friends besides your spouse.

This quote is significant because it lets the reader know that there is some tension between the Grandmother and Rachel. The comment about she doesn't seem to be needed also represents that underlying anger to the reader.

  17. " 'I'm meeting a friend, said Rachel, 'she needs me to help pick out some silk for a new gown.' " (Pg.97)

This quote is explaining that Rachel can be independent and self-focused, even though she is usually attentive and caring towards everyone other than herself.

This quote is significant because is shows that despite Rachel's cheerfulness and attentiveness to everyone's needs, she still feels comfortable enough to go as she pleases without needing to worry about the others she is responsible for-- her own family.

  18. "What matters is what's true. Always. If we didn't know that would we thinking men here in Boston do what we're doing to defend our rights? Would they be laying plans in Philadelphia for the congress if we worried about what the British think?" -Paul Revere pg. 118

Sarah Revere asked her father what matters, what people think, or what is true, and her father answered her with this response.

This question is mentioned multiple times in the book, and I think that if the author emphasizes it that much, it has an important meaning in the book.

  19. "...This great port is about to be closed by Parliament for what we did with the tea." (pg. 110)

Debby is saying that the port where most of their food and supplies comes in will be closed because some Americans dumped the British's tea into the harbor because of taxes.

This quote is significant because it shows that England is trying to get America to buy their stuff with taxes on it or they'll stop selling them other necessities they actually need.

Doctor Warren is saying that many different colonies have sent them provisions to help their colony along.

This quote is significant because it shows that the colonies are working together and joining forces to free themselves from England.

In this quote, Sarah is spying on Rachel when she goes to meet a friend at the market, by orders of her grandmother. It's significance to the story was that grandmother thought Rachel may be seeing someone else, and wanted to know, but Sarah wanted to keep who Rachel was visiting a secret, but eventually tells her father and Sarah finds in their conversation something she wanted to know for a long time, that what is true is what matters.

  22. "His swagger and stance were manly now that he was out of school and working with my father." ~Page 121

This quote means that Paul, Sarah's brother, has changed and grown up since he's been out of school and instead working with his father.

This quote is significant because it expresses Paul's transformation into adulthood. He will no longer be the sibling which Sarah sneaks out with at night and always has fun with, instead he is becoming more serious and isolating childish ways.

  23. Grandmother waited until the door closed behind him. "Follow her," she whispered. "I'll not spy on Rachel," I whispered savagely. "You will do as you're told," Debby said.--> pg 98.

This quote means that grandmother is very strict, cruel, and demanding.

This quote is significant to the story because it says that Debby is on grandmothers point of view.

  24. "Your stepmother is to have a baby. You must be especially considerate of her. And be helpful to her in small ways. And not quarrel or be in a bad temper."~Page 129

In this quote, Doctor Warren is telling the kids that Sarah will have a baby and described by Sarah, "Put a spell on them by using the June night and the tenderness of the moment to bind us together..."

This is significant and important to the story because it brings the family closer together, which they've been needing for a while.

  25. "A line had been drawn in our house, with Debby
and Grandmother on one side, I and Rachel on the other." Pg. 93

Sarah is talking about the disconnection between her family. They are splitting up, choosing sides.

This line is significant because Sarah does not want her family to be split up. She wants it to be together as one and she knows that this turmoil within her family is caused by the stress of what her father has been doing.
