  1. I chose the third one down.
    Forced to Leave
    1. What I think is going on is these people are extremely weary from this long journey and are on the brink of death. Also, I think the one ghostly body is trying to hold on to the people he loves because he has his arm around the one old lady.
    3. I think he chose these colors because they sort of make me feel sad and the sky colors look really peaceful, but they make me feel kinda tired also. 8b 13

  2. I chose the middle painting.
I call the piece, Grieving at the Holocaust.

My interpretation of what's going on is that these people are watching a fire burn down everything they have loved. It is like a metaphor, the Holocaust is as if a fire burnt 6 million Jews to death, and burnt many more that survived with severe holes in their hearts.

I believe the painter went mostly with the radiant red to signify how hot the fire was, and how cruel the intentions of Hitler and the Nazis were. Also, the rest of the painting is mostly dark, to show how terrible and destructive the Holocaust was. Many people are grieving in the dark, but now they must worry about their own welfare.

  3. I chose the first painting/ picture.
    Title: The Crossroads to Death
I think that this is a picture of the tracks that the cattle cars (That carried the Jews) took to the Concentration Camps. These tracks are the ones that carried the Jews to their suffering and death.
I think the artist chose black and white to make the photo more dramatic and looking older. Black and white also makes the photo seem more sad and emotional than color.

  4. - I would name this piece "Upon the Arrival."
    - My interpretation of what is happening in this painting is the Jews are seeing the camp for the first time after getting off the trains. This is probably how they entered the camps when they came to the camps for the first time or when they were forced to move to a different camp. This scene could have been a sign of hopelessness for most Jews.
    - My interpretation of the choice of colors is that the painter wanted to express that most people that went into these camps gave up hope. They no longer saw the joys in life and lost themselves. Some people stopped trying to live all together.

  5. I chose the one on the bottom. I'm going to name it misery because of how treacherous the camp looks. It looks to me as a German soldier is making them work or do something, but they are too weak. Also there is a deceased spirit above them, providing them guidance. The colors that are used are to convey sadness and despair. Even the sky looks sad in this picture.

  6. Name: No Passengers
My interpretation of the painting is the bodies on the train tracks represent the people who died during the Holocaust. It resembles the long track they were taken through and how at every stop they died or was emotionally hurt.
My interpretation of the use of the colors to so that it creates more of an effect. In color it displays brightness but it wasn't a happy time, it was dark and cold.

  7. The Road: Through Their Eyes
This painting is depicting the road to the extermination of the Jews. The railroad symbolize the road the Jews were forced to follow; to the concentration camps. The concentration camp itself seems to loom menacingly over the entire painting.
The painter used black and white because that was pretty much how the Jews saw it-black and white. They were basically sleepwalking;they didn't know right from left. Also, the black and white provides what black an evil look in comparison to the white.

  8. I chose the last piece of artwork on the list.

    -Hollow

-This painting depicts the souls of all the prisoners of the concentration camps in the Holocaust. This family is about to be stripped of all of their belongings and thrown into the torturous camps. Their souls are dead and their bodis are hollow.

-The painter used these colors because they stand out. The family is painted in brighter colors than the backround to show that they haven't been through as much torture as the people who are already in the concentration camp. The sky is mostly orange the represent the crematories in the camp.

  9. - I chose the last painting because the colors intrigued me and just the way the subjects faces looked

    - I named it, "Living among the dead" because all of the people look very withered and there's a "ghost" above them. They all look very ghostly too.

    - My interpretation of this piece is that its a family amongst others in a concentration camp. I feel as if there spirits are almost leaving them with the way they look. They look exhausted, and famished which represents daily life in the concentration camps exactly.

    - The painter used a lot of monotone, dark colors. He chose hues like black, brown, dark green to represent the dread. The painting is very dark and with little color. This painting makes me feel upset because the family looks so much in pain with everything thats happening around them. It's a very interesting piece.

  10. Shadows of a Midnight Fire
I think it is portraying Holocaust survivors, which could be a family, looking into the streets and buildings of concentration camp area. They are looking at their past and others' present.
I think the artist picked red, orange, and pink to represent the nights and fire, which many were burned. They people were shaded black either to depict general people or to show the idea that they didn't have individuality because they were de-humanized to point of making them all the same.

  11. Second Painting Down
    Title: Shadows of Forgotten Lives
I think that these people are just waiting. They are waiting for things to get better, but they have a nagging feeling that they never will. These people are painted in black because they are a few of many people under the Nazi rule. Their lives tell a story, so their physical characteristics are not as important.
I think that the bkack stands for the deaths and black mood of these people. There is not one tiny piece of this painting that hints at a happy mood. it is meant to represent history and feelings, not happiness and smiles. History is not always bright. The people look like they are looking off into the distance. maybe this refers to the better times off in the distance. Also, they are just silouettes. Their lifestyles and dreams have been stripped away. 8A#8

  12. #3 GONE BUT STILL THERE
This poem is so strong, emotional, and I almost couldn't put into words what it means. You can see the death that has happened, the death that is happening, and the death that awaits. Based on this picture alone, you can clearly see the horror in what Jews, etc. went through. The looks on their faces speak for themselves.
Their faces are what impact me the most, specifically the color. They are almost ghost white and that is reflected through the ghost of probably a family member floating above them. They almost don't look human with their facial expressions and the darkness of their mouths and eyes. That represents how dead they already are.

  13. Painting number 2
    "The Burning"
I think this is symbolic for all the Jewish families who lost everything in the Holocaust and how they stuck together until the end. Or it is symbolizing the families standing firm in the midst of the confusion and terror of the Holocaust or standing firm in front of the Nazi oppression.

I think the artist used bleak black and grays for everything but the fire so the fire would stick out and contrast starkly with the people.
This emphasizes the size and fury of the 'fire', which could be an allusion to Kristallnacht or the crematories or the Nazi war machine in general and how it devoured everything in it's path, like fire.

  14. I selected the second one, and I will name it More than Fire.
In this painting I think that the Jewish family is marching towards the fire to their death. I think that the house in the backround is their house that has been taken over by the fire, or Nazi soldiers.
I think the painter used brighter colors for the fire because it is what they are headed for, it is the focus of the picture and you are instantly drawn to it. The people are black because they are dying, but the fire will live on.

  15. I chose the first painting and I titled it, "The Path of Horror". In this painting, one of the railroad the Jews had to travel down is shown. Just the railroad shows despair as it stands alone. I believe the painter made this picture in black and white because he or she wanted to show the monotone feelings on these railroads. Also, the painter used these colors to show what emotions those looking at it should feel.

  16. I chose the third painting.

    Death is Waiting
What I think is going on in the picture is that the family is being transported to another Nazi Concentration Camp. But, they are sick and exhausted, with no strength left at all. And Death is upon them, waiting for them.
My interpretation of the colors is that the artist used red for the burning opf thousands in the crematorium and grays for symbolizing the weakness and sickness of this family.

  17. -Name: Surviving the Flames
-I think that the silhouettes in this painting are Holocaust survivors, and they are walking out of the flames that consumed their religion and represent the Holocaust. They managed to survive the flames, but they're turned around and are watching it consume their homes and businesses. Where the fire once was, the ground they're standing on, there is no life, and all the remains of nature are charred.
-I think the artist used the colors he did because the red of the fire represents the anger and ferocity of the Nazi's and how they would react towards those who opposed them, and the black silhouettes represent the absence of life from the remains of the fire's destruction.

  18. The Walk of Death
there is a family who are at the consentration camp. They are walkinging in to what looks like the incinerator. They may also be watching their homes burn down.
The painter chose black because it was a very dark time. They chose orangy-red because it shows the firey side of the holocaust.

  19. I chose the third painting. I would call it "The Stolen".
I think that the ghost is getting ready to take the old women. She is probably dying and being taken up heaven, but the corpses never actually go to heaven because they suffered so much.
The colors are very neutral and somber. They are probably this way because those times were terrible and gloomy. If the painter used brighter colors, it would ruin the sad, suffering mood.

  20. My name for the piece is The Walking Dead. My interpretation of the painting is that these are the Jews that have been stripped of their humanity. They are walking with death(the ghost) an they almost seem inhuman. I believe the painter chose faded colors to portray darkness of the Holocaust.

  21. I chose the middle one and I call it "The Flames of Death"
My interpretation is that a family has become homeless and emotionally dead. I believe the SS guards came and burned the last of hope from the town. I think the painter chose the red and oranges and then the black for the people because they wanted to get the point across that the life of a family can be sucked away by such a large force, that it with shatter the hope of all.
